Allan,
  I've seen this problem on AOL pre 4.0 (3.0, 2.0) where
it did not work with winsock. Installing 4.0 on my brother's
PC fixed it, but it appears you are using 4.0. What I would do
is the classic Win95 Network uninstall/install.

Goto Network properties, remove everything, except the NIC.
Add the protocols for the NIC you want. Then install AOL
4.0 last. This way it adds it's own dial-up adapter stuff.

This should resolve the problem.
